LET'S TELL A GREAT STORY!
ADDING SHAREABILITY
We asked our super users what would motivate them to invite others to thrift. A more rewarding referral program was #1, but an easy way to share multiple items was a close second. Enter, My ThredUp, a curation of items users can share with friends and family.
UNDERSTANDING MOTIVES
Shopping is personal. We conducted a survey to understand their thoughts about sharing.
They’re usually shopping for themselves. When browsing, customers may come across an item that’s not their style or size but figure it might be something their friend likes.
Sharing feels affirming. A segment of customers pegged themselves as their friends’ “personal shopper/stylist.” Sharing speaks to their sense of style, especially if it hits the mark.
They don’t want to share everything. Customers are wary of sharing their entire wishlist. They’re either worried friends will take their items or want to keep some things private (ex: shopping for maternity clothes).
Design guidelines
Keep it familiar. We co-opted the existing saved items page to reduce feature bloat. New items tabs were added for listings & past purchases.
Make it feel secure. Messaging in the toggle menu makes it clear users can go from “shared” to “private” at any time. We also make it clear that friends will only be able to shop for items SIMILAR to what’s shown.
Make it fun. Encourage the personal shoppers to refresh their lists often. This keeps them sharing and browsing our site.

IT’S INFLUENCER FRIENDLY
With this new functionality, we streamlined our influencer shops. Influencers kept their page fresh and directed their followers to their “shop”. It feels intimate. It’s fast. And best of all, it takes zero effort for marketing. Designers didn’t have to create influencer shops any more.
Influencer onboarding material
My ThredUp’s launch was average with customers but drove significant revenue for influencer shops. We identified a need but for another audience!
Next time, I would add personalization for influencers, like Amazon Storefronts. To address the opportunity on the customer side, I would integrate the referral program and allow them the ability to create different curations.
